AQA’s Centre for Education Research and Practice (CERP) provides cutting-edge assessment research and technical expertise, with a focus on high stakes qualifications such as GCSEs and A-levels. Our researchers include statisticians, psychologists, educationalists and scientists, equipping us with a wide range of quantitative and qualitative research skills. We investigate issues grounded in the practicalities of education, assessment and qualifications and our research is used to continuously improve the quality of AQA’s qualifications and promote best practice in the UK assessment community and internationally. As a placement student in CERP, you will assist with research projects, and undertake some of your own, under supervision. The placement is tailored to the strengths and interests of the particular student, but some of the activities you might expect to undertake include: collecting, manipulating and analysing quantitative and qualitative data; computer programming; and drafting reports. There will also be some administrative tasks including taking queries from customers and other stakeholders. The experience gained during a placement year at CERP will set you in good stead for a career in any field requiring numeracy, data handling and report writing.
The successful candidate will: be numerate, be studying for a degree with a strong mathematical or statistical component and/or a social science degree that includes research methods; possess good organisational skills; and be self-motivated.

Please note that this is a 14-month placement opportunity for undergraduates who are on a university course containing a placement year in industry. You should be available to start in mid-June.

The AQA Guildford office
CERP Guildford is located in the middle of the University of Surrey campus – a student-filled environment with a vibrant, energetic atmosphere. The campus has many green areas centred on a lake, which are perfect for summer picnics. A short walk or bus ride from the campus gets you into town where frequent train services take you to London Waterloo within 40 minutes. Guildford is set in the midst of the North Downs, an area of outstanding natural beauty, perfect for hiking and cycling.
Guildford is home to a variety of attractions, from the cathedral (which featured in the film The Omen) to the castle and its surrounding gardens. In the town centre you can find the High Street, a picturesque cobbled street accommodating local businesses and independent stores, in addition to a large shopping centre. The High Street is also home to a monthly Farmer’s Market offering fruit, vegetables, flowers and crafts. There is always something to do; there are numerous bars, pubs and restaurants, a large cinema, and a local arts centre – G Live – where events ranging from music and dance to comedy can be found.
Surrey Sports Park, owned by the university, is a modern venue comprising a well-equipped gym, a climbing wall, tennis and squash courts and a 50 metre swimming pool. It is the home of the Surrey Storm netball team, as well as the permanent training base for the Harlequins Rugby Union team. Meanwhile, Guildford Spectrum, a large leisure complex, offers bowling, four swimming pools and an ice rink for both ice skating and ice hockey.
